In short
- What you pay now: a company doing IT services pays the HT I rate, ₹7.50 a unit; offices and commercial space pay HT III, ₹9.40. Both pay 25% more from 6–10 am and 6–10 pm.
- Green certificate from TNEB: TNPDCL charges 110% of your normal tariff for a green energy consumption certificate. Buying renewable power through open access can cost less than your normal tariff; we check this on your own bills.
- Open access (HT, 63 kVA and above): at an assumed ₹4.00 solar price, about ₹5.66 a unit through group captive, against about ₹8.17 (HT I) or ₹10.24 (HT III) from TNEB.
- Rooftop and car-park solar with no investment through our zero-investment model.
- Reporting: the top 1,000 listed companies by market value report their energy use, including the renewable share, in the BRSR section of their annual report.
Rates are from TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025 and were still in force on 11 October 2026. The order allows an inflation-linked rise of up to 6% from 1 July each year; the 2026 rise has not been ordered. Illustrative default values — request a site-specific quotation.
What your campus pays TNEB
Illustrative default values — request a site-specific quotation. TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025. The tariff order does not name IT parks. IT services (software, BPO/KPO, contact centres, data centres) are billed HT I by activity (cl. 3.1.2.2); offices and commercial space are HT III. A park that leases space to several companies on one connection should check its EB bill.
Three ways to raise your green share and cut the bill
1. Rooftop and car-park solar. Usually the cheapest unit, and it shows on site. With our zero-investment model, we fund, build and maintain it.
2. Group captive. For a large campus, the buyers together owning at least 26% of a solar or wind plant company and together using at least 51% of its power skip the cross-subsidy surcharge and the additional surcharge. On paper it usually has the lowest cost per unit, before the cost of your equity. How the 26% and 51% rules work →
3. Third-party open access. No investment: you sign a power purchase agreement with a generator. Simpler, though the surcharges apply. Every charge worked out →
Illustrative default values — request a site-specific quotation. Open access figures assume a 33 kV solar plant supplying an 11 kV connection, with line losses, wheeling, transmission, scheduling, cross-subsidy surcharge and electricity tax counted. They leave out the additional surcharge (none ordered for power used after 30 September 2025; TNPDCL has proposed ₹0.63 a unit on third-party power from October 2026, which would make HT III about ₹8.20 and HT IIB about ₹8.12), Aran's facilitation fee, and, for group captive, the cost of your equity.
How we're paid for open access deals: a small facilitation fee on each unit delivered, shared by the generator and the buyer and agreed in writing before anyone signs. We never buy or resell the power.
For server rooms and critical loads, a battery can add backup and trim demand spikes above the 90% floor.
Common questions
What tariff does an IT company pay in Tamil Nadu?
A company doing IT services is billed at the HT I industrial rate, ₹7.50 a unit, with 25% extra from 6–10 am and 6–10 pm (TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2025). Offices and commercial space are usually HT III, ₹9.40 a unit. Your EB bill shows which applies.
How can an IT park buy green power in Tamil Nadu?
Three ways: solar on its own roofs and car parks, buying solar or wind power through third-party open access, or group captive, where the consumers together own at least 26% of the plant company and together use at least 51% of its power. Open access needs an HT connection of 63 kVA or more.
Is a TNEB green energy certificate cheaper than open access?
Usually not. TNPDCL charges 110% of your normal tariff for a green energy consumption certificate. In our worked example (assumed ₹4.00 solar price) open access power lands below your normal tariff, but at a higher solar price, or if the proposed ₹0.63 additional surcharge is ordered, the third-party saving on an HT I connection can disappear. Group captive stays lower.
Can a corporate office get solar with no investment?
Yes. With our zero-investment model we fund, build and maintain the plant on your roof or car park, and you pay an agreed rate for each unit you use. The agreement usually runs many years, so read the exit terms first.
